Why DIET soda is NOT as good for you as you think!
I'm particularly amazed by the number of people who comfortably drink diet soda with the belief that it's safer than ordinary soda. When researching the dangers of diet soda, sadly I've learned it is just as unhealthy as ordinary soda especially because of the ingredient aspartame.
Aspartame is what is used to give diet soda that sweet taste. It is an artificial sweetener and the manufacturers of diet sodas say by substituting sugar with an artificial sweetener, then they are drastically cutting down on calories contained. Unfortunately, this attempt to make beverages healthier for us does the complete opposite.
Artificial sweetener will actually confuse the body. For example if I were to drink a diet coke, because it tastes sweet, my brain will send a message to the pancreas to prepare for digestion of sugar, now that means more insulin will be produced. However, it will not find any sugar in the body to digest, so there will be excess insulin in the body and this can cause diabetes as a result of metabolic confusion. This confusion may also affect your eating patterns. In the past, I've noticed that whenever I drink a diet soda, I will end up snacking on something almost immediately after. Pay attention and see if this happens to you next time you drink a diet soda.
According to researchers, the reason for the snacking is because diet soda excites the enzymes in the stomach which will make them think food is coming, but diet soda does not have any food value so it just ends up teasing the stomach which will then start demanding for food and that’s why you may feel a snack attack afterwards and this could lead to increase calorie intake if you are not eating healthy snacks. This process just becomes a vicious cycle --- you can change it by NOT drinking diet soda. Try the diet soda challenge!
Research studies also show that diet soda is not good for the bones especially for women over 60. Diet soda will actually erode the minerals in the bones increasing the risk of osteoporosis. This happens gradually so it is not something noticeable immediately. By the time you get to 60 years old it may be nearly impossible to reverse the effects.
Personally, in the past, I have experienced mild headaches when I drank to much aspartame; it can be from diet soda or my personal Crystal Light (which now comes without aspartame). The medical profession links these headaches, sometimes even migraines to ingesting aspartame.
One of the most shocking dangers which totally put me off drinking soda of any kind is the effect it has on the heart. Apparently drinking just one diet soda every day increases the chance of vascular death, heart attack and stroke. Researchers from the University of Miami and Columbia University discovered that people who drink diet soda have a 43 percent chance of experiencing heart complications that will result in death. In my opinion, that is just as good as smoking cigarettes.
Lastly, I think everyone should care about their appearance and personal hygiene. Diet soda is toxic to your teeth and with time your smile will not be as bright as ever. Research has shown that the acidic component of diet soda is just as potent as cocaine and methamphetamines in eroding the enamel of the teeth. Regular drinking of diet soda will eventually destroy your teeth.
There are other dangers of diet coke, the list goes on, but these are the ones that I found really shocking enough to think twice about drinking them. Are you thinking twice about drinking diet soda? Try the diet soda challenge to help kick the habit. You're body will thank you for it.
